Echoes of ICILS 2023: The Role of Teachers in Developing Students’ Digital Competences

The International Computer and Information Literacy Study (ICILS) was established in response to the growing importance of information and communication technologies in the modern world and the need to develop digital competences that enable citizens to live well and participate effectively in the processes of an increasingly digitalised society. It also helps education policymakers monitor the development of these competences and understand how teaching and learning programmes in different education systems contribute to preparing students to use information and communication technology actively and effectively.
The Republic of Serbia participated in ICILS for the first time in 2023, with the aim of answering the question: How well prepared are our students today for life in an increasingly digitalised world?

The report The Role of Teachers in Developing Students’ Digital Competences – Report for the Republic of Serbia is an important addition to the previously published ICILS 2023 findings, as it examines valuable data that were not available for analysis and publication at the time the earlier report was prepared. These data were collected from teachers and relate to the context of their experiences, practices and beliefs regarding the use of ICT. The structure of the report guides the reader from an overview of the aims and significance of the study, through the methodological framework, to results presenting teachers’ self-assessments, experiences, practices, attitudes and beliefs concerning the use of ICT in teaching and learning, as well as beyond the classroom.
This report has the potential to contribute to a better understanding of the complexity of digital competence development, which does not take place independently of context or individuals, as well as of the important role of teachers, who co-create this development together with their students. Understanding these findings represents an important step towards creating a supportive educational environment in which every student has equal opportunities to develop the skills needed to function successfully in a digital society.
Both reports are available on the Centre for Educational Technology webpage, in the section National and International Studies – Reports.
